Musk’s role: Co-founder

Brain–computer interfaces. First human implant in January 2024; the Blindsight project aims to restore some vision to blind people.

Neuralink was launched in 2016 by Musk and a team of eight scientists and engineers. Its implant uses threads far thinner than a human hair, placed by a surgical robot. In January 2024 the first patient, Noland Arbaugh, received an implant and learned to control a computer with his thoughts. In September 2024 the Blindsight device received "breakthrough" status from US regulators, and in 2025 surgeons in Toronto performed the first Neuralink implants outside the United States.

Milestones

  • ▲First human implant (January 2024)
  • ▲Blindsight breakthrough designation (2024)
  • ▲First implants outside the US (Canada, 2025)
