SpaceXAI (xAI)

Musk’s role: Founder

Founded as xAI in March 2023. Builds the Grok models and the Colossus data centres; part of SpaceX since February 2026.

Musk founded xAI with eleven researchers in March 2023, at the start of the AI boom; Grok 1 was released that November. In March 2025 xAI and X Corp. were combined, and in February 2026 SpaceX acquired xAI at a valuation of US$250 billion. It was renamed SpaceXAI in July 2026. Its Colossus data centres in Memphis and Southaven provide on the order of one gigawatt of AI compute, and other AI companies rent capacity there.
