Musk’s role: Owner (2022), now part of SpaceXAI

Bought for US$44 billion in October 2022 and renamed X in July 2023 — Musk's bet on free speech and an "everything app".

Musk began buying Twitter shares in January 2022, offered to buy the whole company in April and closed the US$44 billion deal in October 2022. He promised to fight spam bots, open-source the algorithm and restore free speech, and renamed the service X in July 2023. X has been part of xAI — now SpaceXAI — since March 2025, and Grok is built into the app.
